What happened in the Grenfell Tower fire?
The Grenfell Tower fire occurred in the early hours of June 14, 2017, in a 24-storey, 120-apartment social housing building in the North Kensington borough of London.
The incident left 72 dead, and the triggering cause was the short circuit of a refrigerator in an apartment on the fourth floor. The flames quickly engulfed the building.
Upon learning, Meghan Markle decided to intervene and thus reduce the damage caused by the tragedy.
“The Grenfell Tower fire was horrendous, I remember seeing it on the news. The fire left many families homeless, plus all the deaths it caused. I remember saying, ‘Can we do something? We have to go do something,'” he said.
“So I helped the women in Al-Manaar, which is a mosque in Grenfell. They were living in hotels and they were given coupons for fast food. For nine months I visited them and became fond of them, when I saw these women laugh together and cry together, I asked them why they couldn’t do that every day of the week, they said they didn’t have the funds, and we launched a cookbook.”
Since the fire, many people have criticized the management of the building, considered negligent mainly because it is social housing where warnings about the danger of fire were ignored for years. The experts questioned the lining of the building, since it contained polyethylene, a fact that could explain the speed with which the fire spread.
To date, the investigations continue.
