If you laughed uncontrollably with DC The League of Super Pets, the fun continues with El Gran Bati-Dillo, a story where the terrible Mxyzptlk does his thing
You may not have X-ray vision like Superman and Krypto, but you can still get a special look at DC’s League of Super-Pets: The Big Bat before the super-powered animated movie hits theaters.
DC Super Pets League: The Great Bat-Dillo features your favorite Super Pets like Krypto and Ace on an exciting adventure alongside their Justice League counterparts.
But, what is it about? And how did the pets get mixed up with Mr. Mxyzptlk? Writer Heath Corson spoke to the official DC Comics website about the new story and some of the powerful-legged characters he features.
DC Comics: What is The Great Bat-Dillo about?
Heath Corson: The Great Bat-Dillo is about our two teams, the Super Pet League and the Justice League. It’s basically all of the Justice League superheroes and their pets that they adopted after the end of the movie.
This is the continuing adventure of them working together with these pets, who help them in both their normal lives and their lives as superheroes. The complication is that Mxyzptlk
The imp of the Fifth Dimension seems to complicate their lives. Both Krypto and Superman have met him before, and he has returned to play all of his games with Earth and with both super teams. And there are all kinds of surprises along the way!
DC: So we have a team of six Super-Pets going up against Mxy. Do you have a personal favourite?
Heath Corson: I think my favorite is Keith, the water guinea pig that’s with Aquaman, just because I think he’s so funny. He really likes hanging out with Aquaman and he’s excited, but he’s a bit out of shape. He always talks about how hard it is to swim to Aquaman. That made me laugh.
What I wanted to do at first was look at each of the couples and really define their relationship. They all have a different relationship with their pet. Krypto and Superman look a lot like best friends. Ace and Batman are partners, they’re on the same level, they have each other’s backs. And then PB and Wonder Woman have this big sister, little sister mentorship thing.
I really wanted to highlight the different ways each of us relate to our pets and how they are all a little bit different. Merton and Flash are wary of each other. They are running together, but they don’t actually open. As Merton puts it, “We’re not coming out of our shells that easily yet.”
Which member of the Justice League do you think pampers their pet the most?
Superman is the one who pampers his pet the most. Totally.
Superman’s relationship with Krypto is very much based on my relationship with the puppy we fostered during Covid, named Moosie. She is the love of our lives. She is incredibly spoiled and very demanding and a huge pain in the ass.
So even when Superman tells Krypto that he can’t get into the monitor room, he gives him a big bone. “Here, friend, you can chew this!“That is very taken from my personal life. What, “Hey, you can’t do that, but here’s a treat!“.
I had a great time writing the big set and writing them all together. That was a lot of fun for me. It was really, really fun getting to write all the different voices.
Even in the movie, they (the pets and the superheroes) can’t understand each other because they don’t speak the same language. What if they could magically speak the same language? That’s why we endorse Mxy. That’s where the idea came from.
You mentioned Moosie. Were there other pets that inspired you?
In the book there is a page dedicated to all our pets past and present. We had a large 75 pound German Shepherd mix. He was very protective and really goofy. His name was Tucker. Tucker was very much another version of Krypto. Very heroic.
And I had an old gray-haired labrador mix named Phineas. Phineas was a lot like Ace. He was like Clint Eastwood. He thought he was rough and hard, flint. Every time he saw another person or another dog, he would come over to me and protect me. He was the best. He really he gave me my Ace.
I had a kitten named Sammy, also known as Princess Kittyface, who we adopted late in her life and only had for the last three or four years of her life. She decided that I was her person. She would jump on my lap and just purr.
DC: The Super-Pets have their own personalities just like real pets. And powers! Which do you think we should not underestimate?
I think you shouldn’t underestimate Merton! She is amazing. She can keep up with the Flash. She’s older, so she tends to fall asleep or bump into things sometimes.
He’s like 115 years old or something. We really wanted to expand on that, like, what if your grandmother had super-speed powers? But don’t underestimate her. She can run with Flash and keep up with him!
The story is authored by Jared Stern, who also directs this DC Comics animated adventure that will hit the big screen on July 28, 2022.
