The actor David Harbor who plays the Hopper in the Netflix series, stranger thingshas revealed that he already knows how the series ends.
On May 27, the first part of the fourth season of stranger thingsand while fans wait to find out what it will hold for its protagonists, actor David Harbor has revealed that he already knows how the series will end, at least for his character.
At the beginning of stranger things, the Duffer brothers announced that they had planned for the series to last around four or five seasons. Still, there was no official word on this until earlier this year, when Netflix confirmed that the fifth season would be its last.
The series centers on Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), a young woman who was subjected to unethical human experiments that gave her supernatural abilities. After escaping from her, she and her new friends investigate paranormal secrets wreaking irreparable havoc in the small town of Hawkins, Indiana. At the end of the third season of stranger things, Agent Hopper (Harbour), who had taken Eleven in, apparently sacrifices his life to protect the people he cares about. But his story does not end there. Stranger Things in his post-credit scene left clues that Hopper might not have died, something that was later confirmed when the first trailer for the new season was released, which is now about to be released.
Variety was able to speak with Harbor and the actor revealed that he already knows what awaits Hopper beyond the next season. While he didn’t drop any spoilers, the actor found out in the early days of stranger things where Hopper’s story would end, helping him perform better. Harbor didn’t go into detail, but said he would have an emotional conclusion for Hopper.
“I think it varies from person to person, character to character, and I’m such a specialist in bullying that I think I’ve brought it up to them. It’s been back and forth like, ‘What’s wrong with Hopper? Is he a character that can survive Hawkins or does he die? … I know what happens and it’s quite moving and quite beautiful.”
“I think I needed to know, since we were shooting from the beginning, because I needed to know where it ends and for what reason it ends there. I think there’s going to be some morality, or at least responsible storytelling, in what the Duffers are doing.”he explained. “There is a reason in Season 2 that Bob dies. He is too innocent. You can’t go up to that monster and say, ‘Get away from me, get away!’ You cannot be that person in this world. that person dies. So I think there’s an onus in terms of how Hopper ends that I’m anxious for people to see, and I had to know that to know where to bow it.”
Harbor notes that he has been very good at keeping quiet and has yet to reveal any spoilers over the years of making the show. “I’ll take this to my grave, I promise,” he laughs. “This is a big one.”
Although the penultimate season of stranger things is just around the corner, there is still much for the people of Hawkins to do. The most recent images reveal suggest a more horror-filled and adult season. With such an intense story ahead of it, it’s no surprise that the fourth season of stranger things be the longest season so far, lasting 13 hours.
Harbor may have the definitive answer to how Hopper’s story will end, but his co-stars are apparently unaware what will happen to them. Brown and Noah Schnapp recently shared that they’re expecting an even darker season 5, calling for some shocking deaths from the main characters. Presumably, soon they will know all the secrets.
Hopper’s story still has a long way to go, so we’re hoping the end of Harbor’s character will take until the final season.
