One of the failed projects of Batman in the cinema contemplated the union of the filmmaker Darren Aronofsky and the legend of the comics Frank Miller
With the superhero genre in the cinema growing every year, several filmmakers seek to present proposals for a mature audience, something that at the beginning of the 20th century was presented to Warner Bros. by filmmaker Darren Aronofsky, who wanted to make a Batman movie, written by Frank Miller.

In 2022 Darren Aronofsky presents his most recent production The Whale, with Brendan Fraser as the lead. Fraser was slated to play Firefly in the film Batgirl, which was canceled by Warner Bros. in its financial restructuring plan.
Returning to Aronofsky’s failed Batman film, the filmmaker recalled, in an interview for Variety, the moment he began planning his Dark Knight movie “it was after Batman & Robin, the Joel Schumachel one”
“That (Batman & Robin) had been a huge hiccup back then at Warner Bros., so I presented them with an abridged R-rated Batman origin story.”.
duel of visions
Aronofsky pointed out that at the time of presenting his project to those in charge of Warner Bros., the differences in visions were latent, since while the filmmaker was looking to adapt Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns, the studio wanted a less dense version.
“An R-rated superhero movie was probably 10 or 15 years out of step with the reality of the business at the time… It had promise, but it was just a first draft… The studio wasn’t really interested. It was a very different take”.
Even in his casting idea, the battle of ideas between the director and the studio prevailed, especially for the leading role.
“The studio wanted Freddie Prinze Jr and I wanted Joaquin Phoenix… I remember thinking, ‘Uh oh, we’re doing two different movies here.’ That is a true story. It was a different time”.
Despite the fact that Aronofsky did not manage to finalize his Batman film, the filmmaker does not close the doors to making a film of Bat Man
“I wasn’t a comic book kid but I grew up with the big movies and I go to see superhero movies and I like them… If the right opportunity presented itself I would do it”.
