At the age of 19 years and four months, the prodigy from El Palmar (Murcia), a town of 20,000 inhabitants, beat Norwegian Casper Ruud this Sunday, September 11, in the US Open final and, in one fell swoop, lifted his first Grand Slam title and became the youngest ATP number one.
This double dream enhances the “unstoppable” trajectory predicted by his idol Rafael Nadal, the giant that Alcaraz is called to succeed.
Alcaraz beat Ruud in New York 6-4, 2-6, 7-6 (7/1) and 6-3 in an unprecedented final, in which both players could win their first major trophy at the same time and the leadership of the ATP.
The Spanish, who resisted two balls from Ruud to win the third setis also the youngest Grand Slam champion since his compatriot Nadal (Roland Garros, 2005), the giant he aspires to succeed.
