The 2022 Navitimer has preserved the most recognizable aspects of this icon’s design code. Unmistakably a Navitimer from afar with its circular slide rule, baton indices, chronograph counter trio and notched bezel for easy grip. Up close, however, its modern refinements are clear.
The Navitimer, developed by Breitling in 1952, was originally conceived as a wrist chronograph with a circular slide rule that allowed pilots to perform all necessary flight calculations. Just two years later, the American Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), the world’s largest club of aviators, announced that the design would become its official watch. The association’s winged logo was placed at 12 o’clock, and the navigation timer, or Navitimer, was born, which soon became the de facto pilot’s watch during the golden age of civil aviation.
