Bidding between two buyers lasted two minutes and the auctioneer lowered the hammer to $74 million on Wednesday. Including commissions, the total price was $85.3 million.
Sotheby’s had estimated the painting at more than $80 million.
The master of pop art, who died in 1987, has become an auction star.
In 2013 a painting from this series, known as “Death and Disaster Series” had sold for $105 million at Sotheby’ssetting a new record for the artist.
That record was broken by the Marilyn Monroe portrait, “Shot Sage Blue Marilyn” (1964) sold for $195 million on May 9 at Christie’s auction in New York.
On Tuesday, the Phillips house auctioned off two juvenile paintings by the painter for much lower sums.
The 1948 self-portrait “Nosepicker 1: Why Pick on Me,” in which the painter puts a finger up his nose, sold for $491,000, including expenses.
“Living Room”, from the same year, culminated in $315,000.
These two paintings belonged to James Warhola (keeps the original “a” of the last name that Andy deleted), a nephew of the artist.
