Obviously we know him more from ‘Dragon Ball’ and ‘Dr. Slump’, but Akira Toriyama has been a very prolific mangaka that he has left us a small mountain of very interesting short stories that have nothing to envy to his best-known manga.
Now perhaps we will start to look at them more carefully in case they hit us with another surprise, because with practically no one seeing their miniseries coming.Sand Land‘ already has a movie in the works that opens this year.
Crossing the desert at full throttle
the plot of ‘Sandland’ is set in a post-apocalyptic world where resources are scarce and are controlled by a very greedy king. the sheriff Rao is fed up with the situation and along with beelzebubthe son of the king of demons, and his assistant Thief embarks on a long journey through the desert facing all kinds of dangers to find a mythical lost lake.
The manga miniseries was originally published in 2000 and only consisted of eight chapters, so it’s perfect for the movie format. ‘Sand Land’ is being a massive co-production between various studios, with Sunrise, Kamikaze Douga and Anima in the development of animation, and only with Sunrise can we trust that something good is brewing.
The first previews were quite promising, but the new trailer looks pretty good with several action scenes, and it seems they have translated Toriyama’s style well into CGI. In addition to introducing us to Rao and Beelzebub, we also get a little glimpse of everything that will happen to them along the way, including confrontations with bandits and creatures much larger than them.
In Japan, ‘Sand Land‘ will be released next August 18th and unfortunately nothing is known about its international distribution yet, but we are going to cross our fingers very strongly to see if any distributor is encouraged to bring it to theaters here.
