Marvel has been reigning in Hollywood for several years and nothing suggests that this will change soon. That does not mean that he has had to face several controversies and now one has arrived that perhaps they did not count on, since many people have criticized that the character of Sabra will appear in ‘Captain America 4’ and The studio has had no choice but to defend itself.
It was during the last D23 when it became official that Shira Haas (‘Unorthodox’) was going to play Sabra in ‘Captain America 4’, which soon led to complaints about the origins of said characters. In the comics, Sabra is an Israeli superheroine who becomes a Mossad agent and fights against Arab terrorists, although it is never made clear that they are Palestinian. She didn’t pay to be so explicit.
The problem comes with not a few viewers believe that with Sabra he can fall into the glorification of Israel, committing an injustice against Palestine. After all, in Marvel there is no trace of a Palestinian superhero and it is difficult to conceive the idea that something like this will ever happen.
In addition, the character is problematic beyond that, since his very name reminds the Sabra and Shatila massacre committed in 1982in which more than 3,000 Palestinian refugees were killed with the support of Israeli forces, who surrounded the refugee camps and allowed paramilitary forces to enter and carry out indiscriminate killing.
From Marvel they have had no other option than to react to that controversy. It is true that they have not wanted to specify how they plan to handle it, but they have released the following statement:
Although our characters and stories are inspired by comics, they are always reimagined for the big screen and today’s audiences. The filmmakers are going to take a new approach to the character of Sabra, who was first introduced in the comics more than 40 years ago.
Now we will have to see the approach they plan to give to the characterWell, the idea of introducing a Jewish superhero in the MCU is an idea that has nothing wrong with it, but that the chosen one was Sabra is a decision that is difficult to understand.
