We have already left Easter behind – I still think that New Year’s Eve was four days ago – and a box office in which ‘Super Mario Bros. The Movie’ has not given its competitors any respite, but This April 14, a good number of brave people come to our theaters wanting to stand up to the plumber mustachioed from Nintendo with the most varied proposals. Let’s review all the premieres of the weekend!
The premieres of April 14, 2023
‘Renfield’ (2023)
- It is the new movie from Chris McKay, director of ‘Tomorrow’s War’, ‘Batman: The LEGO Movie’ and, most importantly, several episodes of ‘Robot Chicken’.
- The biggest claim of its cast is to see Nicolas Cage playing Dracula, but he is accompanied by Nicholas Hoult, Awkwafina —who is fantastic— and Ben Schwartz, among others.
- Its main scriptwriter and creator of the story is Robert Kirkman, author of comics of the stature of ‘The Walking Dead’ or ‘Invincible’. Big words.
- ‘Renfield’ offers a cocktail of action, festive gore and first-rate unfiltered comedy. A joy.
Criticism in Espinof: ‘Renfield’: Nicolas Cage scatters like Dracula in a gore prank full of action and comedy indebted to ‘What we do in the shadows’
‘The three musketeers: D’artagnan’ (‘Les Trois Mousquetaires: D’Artagnan’, 2023)
- It is directed by Martin Bourboulon, director of ‘Mummy or Daddy’ —and its sequel— and ‘Eiffel’.
- It is the cornerstone of a franchise that aims to adapt the legendary Alexandre Dumas novel in two parts that were shot simultaneously over a whopping 7 months.
- Its cast is full of French stars such as Eva Green, Vincent Cassel, François Civil or Vicky Krieps.
- It promises a good dose of the purest and most classic adventure cinema but with a visual approach of rabid actuality.
Criticism in Espinof: ‘The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan’ is impeccable escape cinema: a faithful adaptation of the classic for the ‘Game of Thrones’ era that promises a big franchise
‘November’ (‘Novembre’, 2022)
- ‘November’ is signed by Cédric Jimenez, responsible for titles such as ‘Marseille Connection’, ‘BAC Nord’ and the notable ‘The Man with the Iron Heart’.
- Its cast includes the talent and charisma of Jean Dujardin, who is accompanied by Anaïs Demoustier, Sandrine Kiberlain and Jérémie Rénier.
- His police story invites us to accompany the French anti-terrorist services for five days after the attacks in Paris in 2015.
Criticism in Espinof: This police thriller recalls the night that changed everything: ‘November’ portrays a Paris destroyed by terrorism, essential to understand recent European history
‘In low season’ (2022)
- It is the return of David Marqués to the big screen after ‘The unemployment club’ and his criticized pandemic series ‘Quarantine Diaries’.
- Its cast includes regulars from our cinema such as Antonio Resines, Edu Soto, Fele Martínez and Ana Milán, who are joined by Coque Malla.
- His proposal will please the parishioners of the comedy made in Spain.
Criticism in Espinof: This sharp comedy with a bitter smile has one of Antonio Resines’ best roles: the screenwriter of ‘Campeones’ continues his saga of “alpha males” with ‘In low season’
And also…
‘Conspiracy in Cairo’ (‘Boy from Heaven’, 2022)
Criticism in Espinof: Cannes Film Festival 2022: Tchaikovsky’s wife goes crazy and a young man from heaven becomes a spy
‘Suzume’ (‘Suzume no tojimari’, 2022)
‘Wonderful disaster’ (‘Beautiful Disaster’, 2023)
‘Scarlet’ (‘L’envol’, 2022)
‘Champagne!’ (2022)
‘If all doors close’ (2023)
‘Mark of life’ (‘Lifemark’, 2022)
