DreamWorks is a studio used to making sequels to its most successful films, but things don’t always go well. ‘Shrek 2’ and ‘How to train your dragon 2’ are one of the few second parts of the study that we could consider worthy successors of the originaland this triad would have to be added ‘Trolls 2: World Tour’which leaves this Friday, November 18, Amazon Prime Video.
Trolls Just Wanna Have Fun
The first of ‘Trolls’ came to us in 2016 was a pleasant animated surprise. A simple but effective film, with a more self-parodying humor than we expected, adorable characters and full of catchy songs. Its sequel was released in 2020 and raised the stakes, surpassing even its predecessor.
In ‘Trolls 2: World Tour’, the friendly trolls we met in the previous one make an unusual discovery: they are not the only trolls in the world but there are up to six kingdoms of trolls, one for each musical genre. When Princess Poppy finds out that rock trolls want to invade the rest of the kingdoms, she goes on an adventure to try to prevent it.
This second part has a very different approach from the previous one, beginning with expand the world that had presented us. The six kingdoms of trolls give a lot of play, not only visually, with that colorful palette that characterizes this saga, but also multiplies the possibilities at all levels.
If the previous one was fun, this sequel is a joy to watch. jokes that make fun of the clichés about musical genres: pop, rock, classical, funk, techno and country (and the subgenres cannot be lost… the battle between reggaeton trolls and k-poperos, to cite just one example).
It continues to exploit one of the greatest virtues of this franchise (and that the fun ‘My Little Pony: A New Generation’ also does very well) and that is that history is aware of itself (cuddly beings full of glitter, who spend the day singing… it doesn’t sound very serious) and makes constant parody.
The soundtrack is also on par with the previous one, making a mix between more current songs and timeless hits. That together with the rest of the elements make up a winning cocktail that it exudes good vibes and leaves you with a smile on your face.
With that alone, it is already a very enjoyable film but it is also that, at the level of subtext, the movie is much deeper than it might seem: If the previous one emphasized optimism, here history tells us about the various cultures that make up our reality and the value of the differences of each one.
‘Trolls 2: World Tour’ surpasses its predecessor by improving everything good from the first part (endearing characters, catchy songs and lots of humor) and presents us with this colorful festival that is enjoyable for children and adults. A little gem from DreamWorks that you have less than 48 hours to watch before it is removed from Prime Video.
