Steven Seagal He’s killed off a multitude of characters in his nearly 40 years as an actor, but there was a moment when he had a spiritual breakdown and decided he didn’t want to kill anyone onscreen again. A complex situation, which he was even more so because he was about to start filming Glimmerman.
You all know by now that Seagal ended up killing a lot of characters in that movie, but what you may not know is that he was the actor stephen tobolowsky who managed to get the protagonist of ‘En tierra perilosa’ to change his mind on the first day of filming. If you remember ‘Glimmer Man’, Tobolowsky plays a serial killer, something he decided to use to his advantage to convince Seagal.
The talk with Seagal
As Tobolowsky himself recalls, the director john gray he told her not to talk to Seagal to avoid making the situation even more complicated. However, Tobolowsky took an unexpected turn in the situation when he replied the following to Seagal:
This case is an exception. I think back to my life as a serial killer and feel like I’m trapped in this broken soul that I inhabit. It would really help me in regards to the development of my reincarnation, if you could kill me. Then I could leave this body and transcend into a life, in a better body. You would actually be helping me.
That answer caught me by surprise. to the protagonist of ‘Above the law’, who then asked Tobolowsky if he “I’d be lending a hand“, which the second did not hesitate to take advantage of to comment that”you would be helping everyone. You would be eliminating evil from the world. Would you give me a new chance at life, sometime in the near future?“.
Tobolowsky recalls that Seagal told him then that “I had never thought of it that way. ok i will kill you in this scene“. Mind you, the “happy ending“was about to break down at the last moment, since Seagal started improvising moments where he pointed out how glad he was that he didn’t kill that character. when the scene was already shot and it was evident that the character died.
That forced Tobolowsky to return to the set two months later to record a line in which he said “Finish me off, you son of a bitch. Don’t leave me like this, kill me” to give the impression that when he was falling dead from the shot he received in the chest, he was actually still alive. Seeing him, Keenen Ivory Wayans, co-star of ‘Glimmer Man’, said that this way the film became a comedy. Fortunately, it must have seemed so unfortunate to those responsible for him that that last-minute solution ended up being discarded from the final assembly.
Despite being one of his most popular films, ‘Glimmer Man’ ended up being a resounding commercial failure – it had a worldwide gross of $39 million when it had cost $45 million – and Seagal’s career on the Hollywood front soon came to an end.
