Although in 2007 Tom Cruise was one of the candidates to keep the role of Iron Man, the actor clarifies if he really was offered the character that was ultimately Robert Downey Jr.
Iron Man represented the spearhead of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, one of the most successful projects in recent years in the cinema, and it would not be possible to conceive this film without Robert Downey Jr as the protagonist, despite the fact that the name of Tom Cruise sounded to keep the role of Tony Stark / Iron Man.

Ever since the lead was in the process, director Jon Favreau always had Downey Jr. in mind as the interpreter of the hero created by Stan Lee and Don Heck.
The same is confirmed by Tom Cruise, who in an interview for the comic book revealed that when looking for the protagonist of Iron Man, his name was not considered by Marvel Studios
“(I wasn’t) even close (to casting)… I like Robert Downey Jr. and I can’t imagine anyone else in that role, I think it’s perfect for him”
In consideration of the protagonist of films like Top Gun and Mission Impossible, if they had called him to do the casting, he would have considered some details to become Tony Stark
“I see the movie (Iron Man) and I don’t rule anything out. What is the history? What is the character? I’m interested? Do I feel like this is what the audience would love to see from me? What can I learn what can I contribute? that’s really how i see things”.
Robert Downey Jr. played Iron Man between 2008 and 2019, appearing in nine films. And according to producer Stephen Broussard, Downey Jr.’s return is something that isn’t on the horizon for Marvel Studios in the immediate future.
