John Wick managed to put a lot of effort behind his old job as an assassin (even if he had to come back the hard way), and Tatsu has cut to the chase with his life in the Yakuza to get married and have a normal life. Many series and movies have shown us what happens when you try to leave the underworld of the mafia, murders and others, although of course ‘From yakuza to house husband takes the cake in terms of telling it in a comedy key.
The Househusband’s Way
the manga ‘From yakuza to house husband‘ (‘Gokushufudo’) from Kosuke Ono It began to be published in the Kurage Bunch magazine in 2018 and already has 10 compilation volumes. Despite being a relatively new manga, it has become one of the comedies slice of life most appreciated in recent years thanks to its protagonists and their adaptations on the small screen.
A live-action series came first in 2020 and was followed in 2021 by a series produced from JC Staff (‘Food Wars!’, ‘Edens Zero’) for Netflix.
The series focuses on Tatsuwho was once a legendary Yakuza member known as the Immortal Dragon and that he didn’t think twice about leaving a trail of corpses in his wake. But then he walked in miku on stage and for Tatsu the only possible option was to leave the world of crime, marry and become a house husband to have her as a queen.
This change of registry is a huge shock for Tatsu, who tries to adapt to his new life as a husband and continues to give his best in each and every one of his tasks. So he treats each and every one of his tasks as a very important mission in which failure is not an option, Whether it’s making the perfect bento, redeeming coupons at the grocery store, or hanging out with the ladies in the neighborhood.
All these bizarre situations (caused by Tatsu being intense and people tend to misunderstand his resting Yakuza face) makes us stand with a hilarious anime with a very black humor.
Each episode works as a self-contained sketch, with different stories that take place in the daily life of Tatsu and his family.. The 10 chapters of the series are very short and none exceed 20 minutes, so we can get into the game very quickly and without getting bored. The new characters are introduced in a very natural way, from the rival clans to the neighbors of Tatsu and Miku, and the plots are not repetitive at all and maintain a very good rhythm that goes as it goes and leaves you wanting more. .
Unfortunately, the weak point of ‘From yakuza to house husband’ is its animation, and it can make a lot of ball when you start watching it. Although this type of anime (speaking of day-to-day comedies) often does not have spectacular animation, the animation of this particular series is very limited and almost resembles an animated manga.
That is, despite the fact that the close-ups and some moments are fully animated and manage to be very expressive to exaggerate the point of comedy, a large part of the chapters are presented almost as a succession of slides with a slight animation.
JC Studio It has already proven that it works perfectly in this format with series like ‘Bakuman’ and ‘Toradora!’, but this aesthetic was a completely deliberate decision because the studio wanted to try to reproduce the style of a manga panel to the millimeter. The objective was to highlight the comic times and the acting capacity of the dubbing team, so that the animation had to be in the background.
So this style of anime may not be to everyone’s taste, and it certainly leaves you wanting ‘From yakuza to househusband’ I would have had an anime with cutting-edge animation. But it is also true that leaving behind its limited animation, It is a perfect anime to watch casually and simply enjoy its black humor and its absurd comedy blows. with a cast full of characters that can’t help but have their adorable dot and leave you with a smile.
