The movie of grease Directed by Randal Kleiser and starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, it was released in 1978. The musical grossed almost 400 million dollarsbecoming one of our favorite musicals.
It has taken 45 years for us to feel that fever for toupees, pink bomber jackets and tight pants again, and a new series is to blame. Although he was a HBO Max project that intended to make a remake in the style of gossip girl with new characters, now the series reminds us of the movie Bad Girls and it’s on SkyShowtime. We talk about Rise of the Pink Ladiesthe prequel to grease which we have already hooked on.
Rise of the Pink Ladiesthe prequel to grease
This series takes place at Rydell High School in 1954, four years before Danny Zuko and Sandy Olsson walked their love by the institute in the movie grease. Thus, the series is a prequel to that wonderful musical that taught us what the pocketing before the term even caught on.
SkyShowtime sells us the series as a feminist prequel, especially if we listen to the official synopsis: “Before rock ‘n’ roll was cool, before the T-Birds were the coolest in school, four girls fed up and Outcasts dare to have fun in their own way, causing a moral uproar that will change Rydell High forever.”
The creator is Annabel Oakes, screenwriter of the invisible girl and Atypicalwho realized that gangs like the Pink Ladies really existed in the fifties, and decided to tell what was left uncounted in the film: the story of how the Pink Ladies were created to which Rizzo, Frenchy, Jan and Marty later belonged.
The Pink Ladies of grease they were what Sandy was not. Uninhibited, daring, shameless and even feminist for the time in which it is set. She thinks it’s the 50s, and for a woman to say “here I am”, it was a revolution. Rizzo was the woman we wanted to be. Determined and confident.
Marisa Davila, Tricia Fukuhura, Cheyenne Wells and Ari Notartomaso are the protagonists who give life to Jane, Nancy, Olivia and Cynthia, four teenagers who for one reason or another are marginalized. One for being too masculine by the standards of the time, another for not having a boyfriend, and two others for rumors about her sex life. We see how they challenge the genre conventions of the time and with a much more diverse cast than the 1978 film.
what does it look like Bad Girls
In this series, To see the protagonists walk in the trailer is to see the protagonists of Bad Girls. That “we’re so much cooler than y’all” air is nailed to Regina George and her henchmen, and one of the reasons I gave this musical series a chance, though in doing so I found out so much more.
With a feminist prism, the series reveals to us women fed up with being judged by their appearance, something of fervent news with cases like selena gomez, and tired of others telling them what to do.
An extra piece of information in case you still haven’t convinced yourself to see it: behind the music of the series is Justin Tranterwho has participated in the composition of issues by Julia Michaels, Lose you to love me by Selena Gomez, fake smile of Ariana Grande or Alice and 911 of Lady Gaga. Almost nothing.
The time for the revolution has arrived, and this time it comes with a pink bomber as a gift.
