We started 2023 with many purposes in mind, but in this new year there is one purpose that we maintain: to travel as much as we can. And if it is close to Madrid to mark an express sword, better.
We already spoke to you on the day of town with the shortest name in Spain and today we will do it from the town with the longest name. It is in Madrid and is the result of the union of two municipalities in the 19th century.
Gargantilla del Lozoya and Pinilla de Buitrago, the town with the longest name in Madrid
It’s found in the Alto del Lozoya Valley, in the Sierra Norte de Madrid but to the south of the Sierra de Guadarrama. Its little more than 400 inhabitants enjoy unique nature, but historically, Gargantilla de Lozoya and Pinilla de Buitrago are much more.

It was the scene in 1470 of the meeting of King Enrique IV of Trastámara and the entourage that accompanied the girl Juana “La Beltraneja” with the French embassy, in the Hermitage of Santiago.
Through “El Camino del Cartero” that linked Rascafría with Buitrago and that crossed the town, the Royal Retinues arrived that broke the Guisando pact between King Enrique IV of Trastámara and his sister Isabel. In these lands the proclamation ceremony of Juana la “Beltraneja” took place heiress to the throne of Castile, and although it does not have many monuments, it does have a high historical value.
The church of San Benito Abad, which was rebuilt in 1943, or the medieval bridges that recall how Christian, Jewish, and Arab cultures coexisted, are also points of interest, as is the aqueduct.
The hiking trails and the natural environment of the town with the longest name
With the Riosequillo reservoir next door, Gargantilla del Lozoya and Pinilla de Buitrago, it is an ideal place for cycling routes, trekking and water sports.

And a bonus: the Senda de la Abeja, a local and thematic itinerary of just over a kilometer with which to learn about beekeeping as a traditional mountain activity, and learn what it can do for the environment and the sustainability of its development.
