This year marks the 111th anniversary of the sinking of the most famous ocean liner in history and the 25th anniversary of the premiere of a the best romantic movies in the history of cinema. We don’t need to tell you that we’re talking about titanic. A quarter of a century later we’re still debating whether or not Jack fit the bill, getting excited about a never-before-seen deleted scene and discovering new details we’d missed… There is no doubt that it is a product that has aged well, but how have its protagonists done?
Alert, SPOILERS. The validity of spoilers crosses the barrier once the movie or series has completed a decade. Titanic is celebrating its 25th anniversary, so according to the moviegoer’s law we wouldn’t even have to warn. But we are nice (and good) people and we are going to tell you that you can read something that is vital in the plot of the film. If you haven’t seen the James Cameron movie yet, you’re in luck because you can watch it on disney+ .
Jack Dawson/Leonard Dicaprio
Although the figure of Jack Dawson never existed in real life, on the screen he stole the hearts of many girls of the nineties. We already know that, because of the discussion table, he did not grow old and died of hypothermia in the Atlantic at the age of 23. However, Leonardo Dicaprio continued with his career in the cinema, managing to distance himself from the image of a youthful idol (but without giving up dating, of course) and winning an Oscar for the revenant in 2016.
Rose Dewitt Bukater/Kate Winslet
Rose was the other main (and fictitious) character, a seventeen-year-old girl from Philadelphia society forced to marry a wealthy man against her will. She will find salvation, in every way, by falling in love with the humble Jack. She survived the tragedy and, in the elderly version of her, she was played by Gloria Stuart at almost 90 years old, who would pass away in 2010.
Cal Hockley/Billy Zane
titanic It was, as usual in its time, a flat and Manichaean movie in the approach to the characters, so if Jack and Rose were the good guys, Cal was the lousy bad guy. He was Rose’s wealthy fiancé, who spent his days on the Titanic trying to break Rose from Jack’s arms and trying to put Jack in trouble. Although he emerged unharmed from the shipwreck, he would commit suicide a few years later. On the contrary, we have been able to Billy Zane in other productions, before and after, such as complete calm (1989), Zoolander (A trendy mindless) (2001) or The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption (2012).
Ruth Dewitt Bukater/Frances Fisher
Frances Fisher played in titanic to Rose’s strict widowed mother. A highborn woman who was willing to do whatever it took to maintain her family’s high social and economic status. The actress, of British origin, is also known for her roles in Clint Eastwood’s films no pardon (1992) and imminent execution (1999).
Lizzy Calvert / Suzy Amis
Although the love story of titanic It is fictional, if the script served to unite two people in real life. The American actress and model Suzy Amis met director James Cameron, her current husband and father of her three children, during filming. In the film she had a small role as Rose’s granddaughter. However, you have also been able to see her in the movies Twister (1989) and usual suspects (nineteen ninety five).
Molly Brown/Kathy Bates
Along with Kate Winslet and Leonardo Dicaprio, Kathy Bates is the most successful actress in the entire cast of titanic. Molly Brown put the kind and funny point in a tragic plot. She was a character based on an American socialite and philanthropist, who was one of the survivors of the ship sinking. A millionaire who in the film was rejected for being “a new rich” and did not drop her rings for approaching the common people. On her side, Bates has been nominated for an Oscar four times and won one of them for misery.
Captain Smith/Bernard Hill
This character, due to force majeure, had to have existed in real life. Captain Smith was based on the historical figure Captain Edward John Smith, who commanded the ship until it sank. As for Bernard Hill, he is also known for the trilogy of The Lord of the ringswhere he played King Théoden of Rohan in the second and third parts of the trilogy.
Thomas Andrews/Victor Garber
Victor Garber played the ship builder of the titanic, Thomas Andrews, who, for obvious reasons, existed in real life. He was also in charge of building the ocean liners RMS Olympic and HMHS Britannic, and was one of the 1,514 who died in the disaster. On his side, the actor has appeared in the series Alias and is also known for his roles in the films Argo and My name is Harvey Milk.
Fabrizio/Danny Nucci
Jack’s best friend, also a fictional character, was Fabrizio who tragically died at sea after the ship’s funnel fell on him. He was played by the Italian-American actor Danny Nucci, who was recently successful with the series 9-1-1 and The offer.
