Nestled in the Sierra del Rincón and in an environment declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, there is a town where the girls from Madrid We go when we want to get away from it all. Located in one of the most beautiful natural areas of the Community of Madrid, in autumn it experiences one of its most beautiful moments when the reddish and ocher colored leaves cover everything giving it an almost fairytale appearance.
we talk about La Hiruela, a small town with less than 100 inhabitants which is located an hour and a half from Madrid’s Gran Vía and where you will find so much peace that you will wonder if it is not living in the country what you really want.
La Hiruela, the town of Madrid to disconnect
Although there are not many documents to confirm this, it seems that the first settlement dates back to the 12th century. The stone, adobe and oak wood houses of La Hiruela dehesa seem paralyzed in time, because since they were built they have barely undergone changes in their structure. Thanks to this, we are facing one of the best preserved towns in the Community of Madrid and one of the most beautiful villages in which to walk through its streets is to walk through history.
It has its own palpable architectural identity, especially in some of the buildings and traditional protected elements such as the pylon, the Flour Mill on the banks of the Jarama River, the Town Hall or the old school. In La Hiruela we can also enjoy “El Colmenar”, a place with more than 200 years in which the families of the town worked beekeeping.
Steep streets and a rural atmosphere full of peace and tranquility that invites you to rest and reconnect with natureas you can see with the virtual tour of the tourism page of La Hiruela.
The enclave to connect with nature without leaving Madrid
One of the best qualities of La Hiruela is its location. From the viewpoint of the Port you can see a landscape of forests, meadows, valleys and streams, ideal for hiking trails (in La Hiruela’s own tourism website shows us some of its routes) and connect again with nature that we forget between so much asphalt and noise in the cities.
In La Hiruela, we can also visit other towns such as the medieval Buitrago or get lost in the forests of Hayedo de Montejo. And it is that in Madrid there is something more than tall buildings, cars and many people. There’s also places that seem frozen in time like the town of La Hiruela.
