In 2017 I traveled here for the first time and I found it to be a charming town. The reason for my trip was none other than my love for series, because scenes from Game of Thrones and as a good fan of one of the best series on hboI could not miss stepping on his castle being just two and a half hours from Madrid.
We talk about a town in Cáceres that National Geographic has described as the most beautiful town in Spain to travel to in April. It is Trujillo, and I assure you that even knowing it as I do, this April I intend to return.
Trujillo, one of the most beautiful towns in Spain
With a mighty castle guarding the town, Trujillo is a medieval jewel. Its monumental Plaza Mayor is the meeting point of the town and based on it, steep streets and hidden corners are intertwined in which to get lost as if we were in another time.
The church of San Francisco or the palace of Juan Pizarro de Aragón are some key points that we find on the outskirts of the town, but as we said the jewel in the crown is located in the square of Trujilloas important to the Romans as it was to Muslims and Christians throughout history.
In addition to the equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro, the work of sculptor Charles Cary Rumsey, the church of San Martín de Tours dominates the square, and although it does not have a monumental portico, its beautiful staircase makes this place a recognizable and highly identifiable area of the town. . Its biggest tourist attraction.
The Old Town Halls with arcades that mix Renaissance ideals with Extremaduran and Castilian popular architecture, the Chaves-Cárdenas palaces, and the spectacular façade of the Marqués de la Conquista palace, whose corner balcony with coats of arms is fantastic, make this square an authentic work of architecture.
In addition, Trujillo is one of those Spanish towns where eating well is not an obligation but something inevitable, because the best of its gastronomy comes together in its restaurants and bars. A bonus, the Cheese Fair which is held the last weekend of April.
Trujillo’s castle
But I can’t finish the article without inviting you to visit his imposing castle. Although the original castle is believed to date from the 9th century, the current structure is from the 13th and 14th centuries. The two homelands and the Tower of Homage, 30 meters high and with a chapel dedicated to Our. Señora de la Victoria, patron saint of Trujillo, make this castle a must-see if we pass by.
Is the most beautiful viewpoint from which you will have an incredible panoramic view of the town and a little piece of history that was lent to become a filming territory for Game of Thrones.
