After years and years of writing comedies, Craig Mazin has found his place as one of the busiest creators on television, thanks to the success of both ‘Chernobyl’ and ‘The Last of Us’, although he still has his small contributions in the business. of the cinema, as lend a hand to Denis Villeneuve in the script of the highly anticipated ‘Dune Part 2’.

In a recent episode of a podcast, Craig Mazin talked about his future, which can be summed up as being very focused solely on ‘The Last of Us’, so has no interest in superhero movies or the ‘Harry Potter’ TV series, but that he doesn’t hate participating in things like ‘Dune’
“I’m out of the movie business, basically. I will work with certain directors when they call me because I love them and because they are so bright. So if Denis Villeneuve calls, then absolutely. I lend a hand for three or four weeks, a month, to work on whatever you’re working on. But most of all, I want to do my own thing and be in charge of my own stuff, and that’s what HBO allows me to do.”
The mere mention of Villeneuve’s name provoked a question about ‘Dune: Part Two’, about which Mazin had to open up:
“I’m a participating writer on ‘Dune: Part Two. I came much later… You go in and do some work… It used to be that you couldn’t even say this, but now they have this extra ‘Literary Material’ thing at the end, so I’m ‘Extra Literary Material’.”
The designation of “Additional Literary Material” is a fairly new WGA rule that allows people like Mazin to walk into the writers room and do quick work on a script without messing up the “script by” credits. This is apparently exactly what you would have been doing. Mazin emphasized his admiration for Villeneuve and made it clear that.
“Every time Denis makes a movie, you must be excited”
