Do you see that? It’s 2023 peeking down the hall. The arrival of November places us, now, in the final stretch of a 2022 film course which, yes, still has a few cartridges to burn; and a good example of this is the large selection of movie premieres that land in our theaters this Friday 4. Quantity and quality for all palates!
The premieres of November 4, 2022
‘Cut!’ (‘Coupez!’, 2022)
- It’s a remake of the wonderful Japanese meta-cinematic zombie comedy — get it — ‘One Cut of the Dead.’
- It is directed by Michel Hazanavicius, responsible for the celebrated —and Oscar-winning— ‘The Artist’.
- Its original title was ‘Z’, but it was changed at the last minute before its Cannes debut due to the lyric’s connotations with the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
- The film was shot in six weeks with a budget of four million euros. The original cost about 25,000.
Criticism in Espinof: Cannes Film Festival 2022: a French remake of an original Japanese comedy about zombies ends up being a great idea to start the contest
’13 exorcisms’ (2022)
- It is the big screen debut of Jacobo Martínez, a director who previously worked on the Netflix series ‘Jaguar’.
- It is starred by that giant of Spanish cinema who is José Sacristán, who is accompanied by María Romanillos, Ruth Díaz and Urko Olazabal.
- The film is based on a real case of the Spanish black chronicle, aligning itself with some recent national and international supernatural horror productions.
- It is written and produced by Ramón Campos, scriptwriter of series such as ‘Now and Then’, ‘Las Chicas del Cable’ or the aforementioned ‘Jaguar’ and films such as ‘Malasaña 32’.
Criticism in Espinof: ’13 exorcisms’: José Sacristán fights Satan in a solid replica of the possession cinema that portrays a sad real case of black Spain
‘Bard, false chronicle of a few truths’
- It is the new film by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, winner of four Oscars for works such as ‘The Revenant’, ‘Birdman’ or ‘Babel’.
- The director of photography for the film is the responsibility of the master Darius Khondji, responsible for marvels such as ‘Seven’, ‘Delicatessen’, ‘Amour’ or ‘Evita’.
- It is Iñárritu’s first film produced and shot entirely in Mexico for more than 20 years, when ‘Amores perro’ was released.
- It’s 152 minutes long, but it could have been longer, because after the Toronto Film Festival, the director cut 22 minutes.
Criticism in Espinof: San Sebastian Festival 2022 | ‘Bardo, false chronicle of a few truths’ is the oneiric masturbation of an unleashed Iñárritu, for better and for worse
‘The prodigy’ (‘The Wonder’, 2022)
- ‘El prodigio’ is directed by Sebastián Leilo, one of the great Hispanic-American filmmakers responsible for titles such as the Oscar-winning ‘A Fantastic Woman’, ‘Disobedience’ and ‘Gloria Bell’.
- Its cast is led by Florence Pugh, Niamh Algar, Toby Jones Tom Burke and Ciarán Hinds.
- It is based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, author of ‘Room’, which was adapted in 2010 with Brie Larson as the protagonist.
- It hits theaters on a limited basis before it premieres on Netflix.
