“The guy from 8”, its characters, its protagonists and the stories that revolve around it have already become legend. We are talking about the most successful children’s series in history, not only in Mexico, but in Latin America. And during the 1970s, its makers became a true phenomenon that transcended entire eras, generations and decades; to such an extent that they remain as current today as at that time.

His big heart, his acid humor and his constant bad mood became distinctive features of “Monchito”, as well as the debt he owed to Mr. Barriga for not paying the rent for the apartment where he lived. . How much money Don Ramón owed Mr. Barriga in “El Chavo del 8”
Mr Ramon and her daughter, La Chilindrina, lived in apartment 72 of La Vecindad de “The guy from 8”. In several episodes we can see, along with other characters, the irascible Mr. Barriga arriving to collect rent from the tenants of the apartments. And although they all complied in due time and form, the one who could never fulfill his obligations was Mr Ramon. To the point that part of the appeal of the episodes was to see how he managed to get out of Mr Ramon of rent payment.
Some time ago, the real estate Nuroa (Mexico) decided to work to unveil one of the great mysteries that was presented to all the fans of “The guy from 8”: calculated the debt that Mr Ramon had with Mr. Barriga. To do this, he first took the data of how many months he owed (the owner of La Vecindad always demanded “14 months’ rent”). He later he calculated that the apartment of Mr Ramon It was about 32 square meters and that -in theory- La Vecindad was located in the downtown area of Mexico City, close to El Zócalo.
Finally, the estimated value of a rental of these characteristics and in that area during the 1970s (when the history of “The guy from 8”) and was estimated at about $63 per month. Multiplying that amount by the famous 14 months, the calculation gives that Mr Ramon owed -at least- $882 (not counting interest).
Now, if we take into account that -except for a few and eventful exceptions- we never saw Mr Ramon pay the rent in the episodes and that his character participated in almost all the episodes between 1971 and 1979, the Mexican real estate company calculated that it was not just 14 months of rent that Monchito owed. According to this last account, in total Mr Ramon he actually owed 110 months’ rent, which brings the figure to a whopping $6,930.
