The feature film released jointly by Universal studios, the Japanese Nintendo and Illumination, adds its third straight week ranked as the most viewed film of the year so far, grossing $434.3 million dollars domestically and 437 million internationally .
Voice actors in the game-based animation include Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Jack Black, and Keegan-Michael Key.
Second place for the Friday-Sunday period went to a bloody Warner Bros. horror film, “Evil Dead Rise,” with $23.5 million.
It’s “an excellent opening” for a movie made for just $17 million, according to expert analyst David A. Gross.
Another new release didn’t fare as well. MGM’s action film “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant,” in which Jake Gyllenhaal stars as a US Army sergeant who returns to Afghanistan to rescue a friend from the Taliban, grossed an estimated $6.3 million and was in third place.
Gross noted that the “weak start” in theaters was well below the usual genre average.
In fourth place, still going strong in its fifth week, was Lionsgate’s neo-noir thriller “John Wick: Chapter 4,” in which Keanu Reeves plays a hit man, with $5.8 million.
Fifth figure “Air”, from Amazon Studios, a sports drama about the commercial agreement that surrounds the sports giant Nike and the shoe of the historic basketball star Michael Jordan that gives its name to the title, with 5.5 million dollars.
