Superman’s black suit is one of the most anticipated sequences in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, and the filmmaker himself explains why the Man of Steel wears this outfit.
One of the most anticipated releases in 2021 is Zack Snyder’s: Justice League, where the filmmaker will finally be able to present the version of the film that he wanted to present in 2017, including the return of Superman, in his black suit.
In an interview with the Comicbook Debate podcast, Snyder explained the reason why Superman wears the black suit in his feature film, a detail that Joss Whedon removed from the final cut on the tape that hit theaters in 2017.
“I was really always a huge proponent of the black suit…I really wanted the black suit; It made sense to me because Superman is a character that notoriously doesn’t grow. It’s like a rock and everything crashes against it.”

For the filmmaker, the reason why the Man of Steel wears the black suit is because Kal-El has reached a great evolution, which he would reach upon returning from the dead.
“Superman had to, at every step, level up and learn something, and be something different… What I had planned was that the final step of Superman, was his true return, or his true going into what I would consider classic Superman.”.
From Death to Justice League: The Story of Superman’s Black Suit
In the comics, Superman’s black suit first appeared in Superman: The Man of Steel #25 (September 1993) in the return of the Man of Steel in the grand event Reign of the Supermen.
This black suit is used when Kal-El seeks to heal wounds, as seen in The Last Days of Superman arc, which marked the end of the New 52 era and the beginning of DC Rebirth.
Justice League will appear in two versions, the first as a four-episode one-hour miniseries, and then as a big movie.
The cast of this film is headed by Henry Cavill as Clark Kent/Superman, Ben Affleck as Bruce Wayne/Batman, Gal Gadot as Diana Prince/Wonder Woman, Ezra Miller as Barry Allen/The Flash, Jason Momoa as Arthur Curry/Aquaman, Ray Fisher as Victor Stone/Cyborg.
The cast also includes Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, JK Simmons as James Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera, Cirian Hands as Steppenwolf, and Willem Dafoe as Vulko.
Zack Snyder’s Justice League is now available on the HBO Max platform.
