The ex-wife of Real Madrid legend Iker Casillas, Sara Carbonero, 38, was hospitalized “urgently” after a routine check-up.
Carbonero reportedly underwent an emergency operation, three years after she was diagnosed with ovarian cancer.
The journalist, who kissed her ex-husband during a post-match interview after Spain won the 2010 World Cup, is said to have been hospitalized after undergoing a routine check-up.
The Spanish magazine “Lecturas” reported that the medical procedure was carried out on Monday at the Hospital Universitario de Navarra in Madrid.
Neither Iker, who officially retired from football in August 2020 at the age of 39, some 13 months after suffering a heart attack, nor his ex-wife have yet made any official comment.
His two children are understood to be staying with Sara’s sister Irene while Casillas continues to work in Qatar. It was not immediately clear what problem doctors detected.
“After carrying out a review, the medical team decided that Sara’s admission was urgent,” said the magazine “Lecturas”, in an exclusive report that is now echoed by other Spanish newspapers.
He added that Iker was willing to give up the World Cup to take care of his children, but it was finally decided that he should remain in Qatar, where he made his debut as an official sports commentator for the Spanish state channel RTVE.
“After being informed of what happened, Casillas offered to give up the World Cup to take care of the children, a decision that was not finally made to bring the situation back to normal. Sara, who currently works on the radio, announced on May 2019 that she had undergone surgery for ovarian cancer while she and Iker were still together. Doctors discovered the malignant tumor shortly after the heart attack that prematurely ended her then-husband’s playing career.”
The 38-year-old woman underwent surgery at Madrid’s prestigious Clínica Ruber Internacional to remove the tumor before undergoing several months of chemotherapy.
Casillas, nicknamed Saint Iker for his ability to produce spectacular saves, officially announced his retirement from professional soccer last August following his heart attack in May 2019 while with Portugal’s top-flight club Porto.
He made 510 appearances during his 16 years with Real Madrid and is widely regarded as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history.
He secretly married Sara on March 20, 2016, three months before the birth of their second child, Lucas, but details of the union emerged 10 days later.
