We find more and more streaming anime and even platforms dedicated exclusively to this type of content, such as Crunchyroll or the newcomer Animebox. Despite this, there are still certain classic titles that inexplicably we still don’t have available.
Although titles like ‘Berserk’, Slayers’ or ‘Ranma 1/2’ have been recovered, here are a few classic anime that some platform should urgently rescue, all of them issued in Spain.
‘Sailor Moon’
The ‘Sailor Moon’ thing is from a duty court. It can’t be that she hasn’t rescued anyone yet the quintessential Magical Girls series (and no, it doesn’t count ‘Sailor Moon Crystal’ or the movies). The 1992 anime was a boom at the time and continues to be so today. We need to listen again to Usagi (or Bunny, depending on how you knew her) and to the rest yelling that: “In the name of Luna, I will punish you!”.
‘The Rose of Versailles’
Another anime that will have a new movie coming soon. But what about the classic 1980 series for when? This particular version of the French revolution created by the teacher Riyoko Ikeda It went deep during its broadcast in Spain (some of you will remember it as ‘Lady Oscar’) and since then we have not seen the hair of its animated version again.
‘The magical Doremi’
We all cried when ‘Finding the Magical Doremi’ was released, and not just with emotion: although the anime was broadcast in many autonomous regions, making its way into our otaku childhood, it was only partially released on DVD. Hopefully the time will come when we can enjoy on request of the Adventures of our favorite witch apprentices.
‘Slam Dunk’
‘Slam Dunk’ is back in the conversation for his recent film but no platform currently has the mythical adaptation of the story created by Takehiko Inoue. Despite the fact that its end is abrupt, it won the hearts of thousands of otakus and got more than one interested in basketball.
‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex’
Not even the live-action adaptation starring Scarlett Johansson has been enough for it to be reissued in a domestic format or for any platform to be interested in the two seasons of ‘Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex’. From Mamoru Oshii’s movies, Kenji Kamiyama’s series is undoubtedly the most interesting approach to the cyberpunk work of Masamune Shirow and, even so, we have not heard from her again.
‘Family Grows (Marmalade Boy)’
If we talk about otaku childhoods, how can we forget about ‘The family grows’? One of those most remembered animes from the 90s and the most iconic romantic comedy of that era above other classics like ‘Kimagure Orange Road’. Miki and Yuu’s entanglements earned our affection but it doesn’t seem like there’s any interest in getting it back.
‘Batters (Touch)’
If we talk about sports animes, we have to mention this one baseball classic based on the manga by Mitsuru Adachi. In Spain they broadcast it on Telecinco in the early 90s, with the peculiarity of being one of those animes that adapted the names into Spanish (Tatsuya was Carlos, Minami was Bárbara, Kazuya was César…). Will they ever hit streaming again?
‘kare kano’
Despite being another of those animes that will never end, it is still one of the great works of Hideaki Anno and GAINAX (responsible for ‘Evangelion’) and one of the best intimate anime ever. Now that it is going to be reissued in Spain, it is a good time to recover this anime about first love, false appearances and what we aspire to (or think we aspire to).
‘utena’
We end with one of those cult anime that caused a sensation in the 90s and that was the only work by Kunihiko Ikuhara (‘Mawaru Penguindrum’, ‘Sarazanmai’) that we have been able to see in these parts. Fights, symbolism, surrealism, absurd humor… and the end of the world. Again, maybe with his next reissue in physical format he will be lucky and it will reach platforms.
