Quentin Tarantino He is one of the great American directors of our time. He will be liked more or less, but his films are usually well received by the public, to the point that practically all of his films have been box office successes. However, he himself is clear about the worst feature film he has madewhich coincidentally coincides with its biggest theatrical flop.
“It meant nothing to them“
Some of you have already guessed that I am referring to ‘Death Proof’, the film he directed in 2007 and which was part of the initiative grind house which also gave rise to ‘Planet Terror’. Neither of them did well at the box office and Tarantino noted the following when explaining the failure of both:
With Grindhouse, I think Robert and I thought that people had a little more insight into the history of double films and exploitation… No, they didn’t. Not at all. They had no idea what they were looking at. What we were doing meant nothing to them.
‘Death Proof’ finished with worldwide revenue of $31 million, quite a low number If we take into account that it cost 30 million. It is true that something more would have to be added to its collection, since in the United States it was exhibited simultaneously with ‘Planet Terror’, managing to add another 25 million to be divided between the two. It still gives losses even taking that into account.
It is not clear if that was the key for Tarantino to recognize years later that ‘Death Proof’ is the worst film he had ever made, but beware, that does not mean that he does not like it, because he himself pointed out that it was not a problem for him and justified it like this:
‘Death Proof’ has to be the worst movie I’ve ever made. But it wasn’t that bad, right? So if that’s the worst thing I do, all right.
And it is that for Tarantino the legacy is important and he himself pointed out at the time that “the latest movies by most directors are fucking pathetic“and in the case of ‘Death Proof’ made the following reflection:”But I do think that one of those movies that have lost their touch, old, limp, and limp dick costs you three good movies as far as your score is concerned.“Perhaps for this reason he remains convinced in his decision to retire after his next film.
By the way, Do you agree that ‘Death Proof’ is his worst film? I would surely speak in other terms and refer to her as “the least good” of her filmography, but I also know that there are great defenders of it. Where I do not agree with Tarantino at all is in what he himself chooses as his best film.
