Pixar is going through a difficult time at the international box office, so they are already working on a project that could bring them back to their glory days.
It is not a secret that the latest films from Pixar have not given the expected results for Walt Disney, so the animation company has in Toy Story 5 a hope to return to the top places at the box office.
After the premiere of Onward (2020), the Covid pandemic led Pixar to release some productions directly to Disney+, such as Soul (2020), Luca (2021) and Red (2022), so the return to theaters of cinema was found with Lightyear, a film that collected 226 million dollars.
These figures are considered a failure, since the tape had a budget of 200 million dollars. In 2022 Elemental grossed 50 million in its first week in movie theaters, a lower figure than expected.
Some keys that have influenced people to move away from Pixar productions is the cost of going to the movies in many countries, added to the criticized forced inclusion in their plots, something that audiences and even groups in defense of the rights of LGBT people.
How could Toy Story 5 rescue Pixar?
In 2019, Toy Story 4 grossed $1.073 billion, becoming one of Pixar’s four movies to top one billion at the box office.
As SMASH informed you in a timely manner, in February 2023 Pixar announced that it is already working on Toy Story 5, a film that will bring back beloved characters, such as Woody or Buzz Lightyear.
In the opinion of Pete Docter, writer and director of films like Up, Inside Out and Soul, Toy Story 5 is the story Pixar needs.
“It seems that people want the comfort of things they already know, like sequels or movies based on comics or video games. But all this (Toy Story) was original at the time”.
Although there are stories that Pixar wants to present, the return of Toy Story in a new installment is a great challenge to which the public will respond at the box office.
“It is essential for us to develop new stories, even if they are more difficult to advertise and to make people want to see them. But I think our public is worth it.”
More surprises beyond Toy Story 5
Docter pointed out that in addition to the new stories and characters that will arrive in the future, a sequel is already in the works.
“Our audience wants to be surprised, but also with some comfort in their expectations. Therefore, we have several sequels underway. We’re doing a sequel to Inside Out, again with Joy and Sadness. We also have another ‘Toy Story’ project, so Woody and Buzz will be back.”.
