Although ‘One Piece Film Red’ has just begun to fly internationally, in Japan it has been filling movie theaters for many weeks. Until practically nothing it was impossible to move it from the first place at the box office, and although now some position has fallen, it continues to collect millions of yen every week.
After the last weekend, the new ‘One Piece’ movie has broken another barrier and is already close to surpassing the historic collection from ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’.
More billions for pirates
According to the Japanese medium Kogyo Tsushinsha, ‘One Piece Film Red’ has grossed 18.04 billion yen from its premiere until November 6, about 123.29 million euros. In total, more than 13 million tickets have also been sold, which is already in sixth place on the list of highest-grossing anime films in history.
In fifth place is ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’ by Hayao Miyazaki, which at the time achieved the impressive figure of 19.6 billion yen. If for the next few weeks’One Piece Film Red’ keeps its journey at the same pace, it could become the fifth highest grossing anime film in history, and the eighth highest grossing in Japan.
And although it looks very good, it will not be an easy task. This same weekend opens in Japan ‘Suzume no Tojimari’ by Makoto Shinkai, which also has the potential to become another directorial hit. Because continuing with the list, ‘The time with you’ is in eighth place at the box office with its 14.19 million yen, and ‘Your name’ holds third place with its 25.03 billion yen.
We will have to see how the following weeks develop and if the crew of Luffy either remain unstoppable or they ultimately settle for a very respectable sixth place.
