Gunn commented on Twitter that he is currently writing a new “man of steel” movie and plans to cast a different actor to play “Clark Kent.” Cavill confirmed the news via his Instagram, writing: “The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that. James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and everyone involved in the new universe the best of luck.” good luck, and the happiest of fortunes.”
The script he’s writing will focus on “an earlier part of Superman’s life,” hence the recast, according to Gunn. The director also commented that he and Safran are “big fans” of Cavill and that they hope to “work together in the future” on a different project.
It has not yet been announced who could be the director for this new Superman movie. The news comes just weeks after Cavill’s last appearance as Superman. The actor donned that familiar red cape for an end-credits cameo in Black Adam, where Superman has a meeting with the anti-hero played by Dwayne Johnson.
Cavill’s cameo appeared to be setting up plans for a future movie, and Cavill posted a celebratory video on Instagram, telling fans, “I’m back” and to wait for more details, but this will no longer be the case.
DC’s production slate has been in flux recently, with reports of how Gunn and Safran’s new tenure could affect plans for future films. Gunn posted on Twitter that he and Safran have “a DC slate ready to go, so we couldn’t be more excited.”
He added that he will share more details about the upcoming release schedule for DC in early 2023. Gunn also confirmed reports that he met with the actor from Batman, Ben Affleck, to discuss his possible future productions with the studio as well. “He wants to direct and we want him to direct, we just have to find the right project,” Gunn wrote. Affleck will reprise his role as Batman in Flashalong with the controversial Ezra Miller.
