The first season of The Sandman adapted two of the story arcs created between 1988 and 1996 by Neil Gaiman. such as Preludes and Nocturnes, as well as The House of the Dolls, the second volume that features Rose Walker, a woman who in the comics has a Caucasian complexion.
For this series, the actress Vanesu Samunyai is the one who embodies Rose Walker, who becomes an ally of Dream, being a vortex of the dream, a being that can have the dream kingdom and the waking world in harmony.
What is a Dream Vortex?
A vortex can be explained as a gateway to the Realm of Dreaming, Dreaming. All sleeping people can access this realm individually, but you cannot roam in it.
If this individual barrier is broken, there is a risk that there will be more than one dreamer in the Dreaming realm, and this can collapse their minds, as well as putting the Dream Realm at risk.
This leads us to the dream vortices, beings capable of having a connection with the Realm of Dreams, can wander through this realm and navigate between people’s dreams.
As if things weren’t complicated, these beings can’t control their powers, so Dream must kill these beings, and it’s the only time Morpheus can kill a living being.
Meet Rose Walker
Rose Walker is the great-granddaughter of Unity Kincaid, a woman with the power to be a Vortice, who fell into a deep sleep when Dream was captured by Roderick Burgess, who imprisoned him for over a hundred years.
During this deep sleep Unity met a handsome man in Dreaming with whom she had a son, that man turned out to be Desire, Dream’s brother and one of the Eternals. Desire planned to have a child with Unity to get Sueño off the map.
If Dream killed the son of Unity and Desire, or their grandchildren, he would be violating a law that prevents Eternals from killing each other or their descendants.
But Unity, with the power of being a Vortice, chooses to save Rose and sacrifices herself, this so that Morpheus doesn’t kill anyone, Rose has a normal life with her little brother Jed, which ruined Desire’s plans.
