Beware of spoilers for ‘Nope!’ in this article
A very striking thing about ‘Nope!’ is its title, since a priori no one would expect a film to be called that. As well, there are three ulterior motives for which the also director of ‘Let me out’ and ‘Nosotros’ chose him. The first of them was revealed several months ago, when we still barely knew anything about her:
The movie is an attraction. The title speaks to the idea that the public reacts to what they think and feel in the cinema. When you tell people it’s a scary movie, they often say nope! So I want to recognize those people with the title and attract them. It’s about the person who thinks he doesn’t like horror movies. To show them that maybe they do like it.
However, it is likely that this explanation was more of a decoy so as not to delve too deeply ahead of time. And it existed a well-known theory about what Nope (the original English title) meant “Not of Planet Earth“(Not from Planet Earth), something that is lost when translated into Spanish. Peele himself has confirmed that this theory is real, adding another explanation:
I was trying to let people find out for themselves, you know? So I wasn’t leaning into that, but the cat is out of the bag. We are talking about a UFO here. And he’s not from planet earth.
And also, of course, it refers to how black people, what would we say if we saw a UFO, like nope. Not alien.
