It is undeniable that fashion vintage and second-hand lives a peak moment. This market has been booming for a few years and it is even estimated that by 2030 it will win over fast fashion (according to data from the study “Consumer Trends 2022” by Samy Alliance). It was clear that Inditex could not remain on the sidelines.
The group founded by Amancio Ortega has historically been innovative, adapting to new customer requirements (see how it implemented the purchase on-line or the sustainability part). Now, it has just announced a formula to sell Zara garments from other seasons, joining H&M that launched it in 2021.
This new system will be released in the United Kingdom on November 3 under the name “Zara Pre-Owned”. It will consist of the possibility of repairing and selling old clothes of the brands and it will be possible to access it through the web, the mobile application or the stores.
Reuters says that the resale section will be organized by product categories with detailed information on each item, including current images provided by the seller and original product information provided by Zara.
In addition, it will integrate the possibility of donating clothes. We did find the latter in other brands until now and Zara herself also had it since 2016, now it will be part of this section.
With this move, Inditex is deeply interested in reducing its carbon footprint and moving away from the controversial path of other low cost like Shein.
According to Paula Ampuero, director of sustainability at Zara, the service is not expected to be profitable from the start:
“At this stage, this platform is intended solely as a tool to help customers extend the life of their clothing and adopt a more circular approach.”
From Zara they have declared that they have chosen the English market because their consumers push them to improve and innovate, but it is more than possible that the service will be extended to other countries.
