The most recent case comes from the southwestern German city of Mannheim, where a 72-year-old woman was arrested after turning off not once, but twice! the artificial respirator of one of her roommates at the hospital because the noise it made bothered her.
According to the local press, the woman was arrested on suspicion of attempted manslaughter the day after the unusual incident, on November 30.
In a joint press release, Mannheim police and prosecutors said the suspect is alleged to have turned off the 79-year-old woman’s ventilator and then, despite being told by staff that the machine was vital to the patient, less than two hours later she deliberately turned it off again because she “felt disturbed by the noise coming from the oxygen device”.
Although the hospital staff informed the suspect that the oxygen supply was a vital measure, she is said to have turned the device off again around 9:00 p.m.
According to reports, as a result of the woman’s foolishness, the victim had to be resuscitated and although, fortunately, her life was not in danger, she remains in intensive care.
As for the suspect, she was brought before a judge and from there to jail. Meanwhile, investigations remain ongoing.
