Bruce Banner’s mind is literally in the driver’s seat of the Starship Hulk, and that could be a deadly combination.
Before we dive into what is sure to be an epic clash, Marvel.com looked back at some of the most memorable Hulk and Thor battles over the years.
Journey Into Mystery (1952) #112
Thor and Hulk first met in Avengers #1, and soon became teammates and founding members of Earth’s Mightiest Heroes. However, they were never friends and the Hulk left the team in issue #2 when he realized they didn’t trust him.
In issue #3, readers got their first look at a real battle between the Hulk and Thor. Journey Into Mystery #112 featured a flashback to that fight, which Thor linked to a group of rival Hulk and Odinson fans. You see, in the days before the internet, overly passionate fans would gather on the streets of New York to argue over which hero was the strongest.
No definitive answers found here, but Thor learned the hard way just how dangerous the Hulk could be. In a moment of pure ego, Thor asked his father, Odin, to temporarily release him from Mjolnir’s enchantment just to see if he was stronger than the Hulk.
Perhaps the Hulk felt that the hammer was Thor’s weakness, because he spent most of the fight trying to destroy it. After a few close calls, Thor was lucky enough to fight the Hulk to a standstill.
The Defenders #10
In the midst of the Avengers and Defenders war, the Hulk and Thor once again crossed paths during their quest for the evil eye. Loki and Dormammu tricked both teams into fighting each other, but the Hulk needed little reason to fight Thor.
Although Thor tried to reason with his former teammate, they were soon at each other’s throats. This may also have been his first fight in public, as they devastated the city around him in an incredible display of power.
Regardless, they were more evenly matched in this matchup, battling to a draw just as their teammates arrived to finish their battle.
The Mighty Thor #385
This Hulk and Thor rematch took place at an unspecified time in the past when they renewed their rivalry. In this nearly issue-long battle, the Green Hulk showed a chilling and ruthless streak. Threatening a woman’s life, the Hulk blackmailed Thor into fighting him without the power of Mjolnir.
In turn, this was a more one-sided affair than many of their previous conflicts. Thor was heavily beaten, despite the fact that he refused to give in to the Hulk’s strength. In the end, Thor realized that fighting was pointless and that he had once again allowed a battle with the Hulk to cause unnecessary destruction and chaos.
Hulk: Let the Battle Begin #1
In perhaps the shortest battle between the Hulk and Thor, the son of Odin was decisively knocked out by his own hammer.
Mjolnir’s enchantment only allows it to be picked up by someone worthy of its power, but since Thor already had the hammer in hand, the Hulk simply had Odinson beat himself unconscious.
It wasn’t Thor’s proudest moment, and perhaps it just fueled bad feelings between them.
Immortal Hulk #7
As Thor has grown more powerful over the years, so has the Hulk.
Within the first few issues of Immortal Hulk, Thor theorized that the Hulk had become more than just a mere mortal. He suggested that Banner’s incarnation of the Devil Hulk was something closer to a god, and the Devil Hulk did something no other Hulk has done: he actually hurt Thor.
In a single blow, the Hulk knocked out one of Thor’s teeth and cracked his skull. With Thor out of the picture, the Hulk easily fought off the rest of the Avengers until they unleashed an orbital weapon on him.
Immortal Hulk #46-47
When Thor got his rematch with the Hulk a few months later, he was understandably not happy to see the green goliath again. By this time, Thor had acquired his full powers from Odinson, but the Immortal Hulk seemed to be far beyond any previous incarnation of the beast.
In a moment of pure rage, Thor shattered the Hulk’s arm with a lightning bolt, only for the Hulk to allow the arm to regenerate around Thor’s head in an attempt to suffocate him. It was grotesque and almost enough to kill Odin’s son.
