The boom in Nordic series brought many police and noir genres but, little by little, more variety of genres are beginning to reach us. Without going any further, this year Filmin premiered ‘everything you love’a romantic drama whose premise begs the question: Could you fall in love with a Nazi?
THE 10 BEST SERIES OF THE DECADE (2010-2019)
Beyond love
Sara (Mina Dale) is reunited with Jonas (Jakob Fort), an old college classmate with whom she starts dating after reliving their past attraction. The relationship seems idyllic but Sara iignores that Jonas is being radicalized by extreme right groups through forums.
Undoubtedly, a striking starting point that begins this series of 7 episodes, half an hour longcreated by Marie Hafting (‘Young & Promising’) and directed by Stian Kristiansen (‘Home Ground’).
Thematically, the series has these two open fronts: on the one hand, the love story and the intimate approach to the relationship between the two protagonists and, on the other, that rise of the extreme right we live in todayaggravated by the presence of different broadcast channels on the Internet.
A topic that is very topical and that manages to impact the viewer from the beginning. The series revolves around to what extent can we separate a person from his idealshow the Internet influences the diffusion of certain movements and if one is willing to abandon their beliefs (or ignore those of the other person) for love.
The series shows a true interest in dealing with this topic in its complexity (it is not a dramatic excuse to “give baggage” to the character, as sometimes happens) and tries not to idealize the situations he deals with for better or for worse.
Does not demonize or victimize Jonas rather, it shows him in all his greys, on the basis that viewers are smart enough not to justify Nazi ideology, even though we can understand how the character is evolving.
By contrast, Sara remains in a somewhat static character, which lacks nuances to propose a more interesting path according to what you want to tell. At the moment of truth, the series could have given much more play to their doubts if they had given it greater depth.
In fact, the greatest weakness of this fiction comes from this part: although the series advances its two fronts in parallel, the moment in which both plots meet and are resolved seems somewhat rushed (Thinking about doing a season 2, maybe?), leaving you wishing you had one more episode to develop it better.
‘everything you love’ part of a dilemma to pose the conflict between romantic history and politics. Although her outcome was for more, it is interesting enough to maintain interest throughout its 7 episodes.
