It must be recognized that Asturias is one of those provinces where there is a lot to see. Where we can discover ideal charming towns, larger cities such as Gijón or Avilés and where to enjoy its people, its corners, its gastronomy… For this reason, today we want to dedicate ourselves to discovering corners of Oviedo that we cannot miss if we go through the capital.
The Cathedral (and its surroundings)
Well yes, we start with the Metropolitan Cathedral of El Salvador of Oviedo that we find in the center of the old town that is well known not only for its external beauty, but also for the great relics that it keeps inside.
In addition, it is located in the area of the Plaza de Alfonso II el Casto where we find a whole sample of buildings from different centuries such as the Palacios de Valdecarzana, the Palacio de Camposagrado or the Chapel of La Balesquida, Casa de los Llanes, Notarial College and Rúa Palace or Marques de Santa Cruz. Come on, we have everything.
City hall
In the Constitution Plaza we find the Town Hall building designed in 1622 by Juan de Naveda taking advantage of the support of the old wall, where we have the Tourist Information Office in front of us and to one side the Church of San Isidoro, two other points to visit. Undoubtedly, a square that we cannot stop visiting and with which to delight ourselves.
Market and Plaza del Fontán
Since we are in the downtown area, we will take the opportunity to take the corner closest to San Isidoro, through which we exit towards El Fontán and find the food market, with the sale of meat, fish, cheese, pickles, vegetables, fruit and gastronomic products. typical and handicrafts most typical of Asturias in a building that is a good example of the iron architecture of the s. XIX.
But be careful, because the square that bears his name is to be deeply delighted.
The sculptures
Throughout the city of Oviedo we will be able to discover a good handful of urban sculptures that make it a real museum on the street. There are many that we can name as La Lechera, la Regenta, el Viajero… or the one with Woody Allen, a life-size bronze sculpture of the American actor and director.
The field of San Francisco
If we go to Oviedo we have to take a good walk through the San Francisco countryside, take a picture with Mafalda (of course) since we are talking about sculptures and enjoy the more than 9 hectares of land and a large number of plant species around feet from the old town.
The Basilica of San Juan Real
Another essential is this basilica located between the streets of the historic center of Oviedo and which was built on a previous small pre-Romanesque church, with incredible beauty.
Clara Campoamor Theater
If we go to Oviedo we have to stop by one of the most popular places, where the Princess of Asturias Awards are held: the Clara Campoamor theater The purpose of which, in addition to hosting major events, is to be the city’s opera founded in 1892.
The best thing is that if we see this building it means that we are in the Plaza de la Escandalera where we can see a lot of mythical buildings of the city such as the Caja de Asturias, the Casas de Conde, the General Meeting of the Principality of Asturias or the Thermometer Building.
Santa Maria del Naranco
And as a bonus, we have to see Santa Maria del Naranco which is four kilometers from the city but worth visiting. It is an old palace located on the southern slope of Mount Naranco, which is one of the symbols not only of the city, but of the entire community.
Of course, since you are in the area, don’t forget to go to the gascon street to have a good cider and visit the Uria Street to do some shopping.
