Back in 2009 ‘Glee’ was released, one of the most popular musical series in history if not the most. The series created by Ryan Murphy would open the door to others that were later encouraged by the genre, such as ‘Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist’ or ‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’, which will leave Netflix on May 4.
“I’m just a girl in love”
Rebecca Bunch has the life she always dreamed of: working as a lawyer in a successful law firm in New York. However, her world is turned upside down when she is reunited with Josh, her boyfriend from her high school, and decides to drop everything to chase him back to his small hometown… even though he completely passes her.
‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is a series Created by and starring Rachel Bloom (‘Reboot’) alongside Aline Brosh McKenna (‘Cruella’) and aired between 2015 and 2018 on The CW. It concluded with four seasons, which in Spain are available on Netflix for a limited time.
Although its synopsis may give the wrong first impression of the type of history that we are going to find, one only has to see the first episode to realize that it is not a scurrilous series, quite the opposite.
On the one hand Bloom embrace romantic comedy without denying it, at the same time that he makes a simatic parody Of the same. It uses all the clichés of the genre that have been and have been and gives them a comedic approach, causing the comedy to see how scenes that are familiar to us end up totally hilarious.
Not only that, but he does it to the rhythm of music: in each chapter, we find a couple of very well integrated musical numbers. Every time Rebecca or some other character wants to talk about her feelings, they do it through some flashy choreography and giving the chest.
The series seeks the complicity of the viewer when making these sequences, which are also a parodic imitation of well-known video clips and musical styles.
Although the references are quite clear, all their songs are original. Quite a merit and one of the main characteristics of the series, which gives us such iconic songs as ‘The sexy getting ready song’, ‘Let’s generalize about men’ either ‘Sexy French Depression’.
As a comedy it’s hilarious, thanks in no small part to Rebecca’s quirks, which are more complex than initially revealed. The Serie exploits the humor of the character but without justifying his actions and she has no qualms about pointing out the moments in which she can become toxic to herself and to others.
As shown by recent series such as ‘The sexual life of university students’ or ‘Mom’, can combine being tremendously funny with being able to talk openly something more seriouswithout trivializing them or completely breaking the tone of the series.
The protagonist starts from the stale stereotype of the “crazy ex-girlfriend” to turn it around and show us a wounded character who You want to believe that finding love will put an end to all your problems.. Its evolution throughout history is a most interesting journey and, above all, fun.
Rachel Bloom is the queen of this party but the rest of the cast must not be detracted from, who make up a quirky cast of characters that endears you: Vincent Rodriguez III (‘Insatiable’), Donna Lynne Champlin (‘Birdman’), Pete Gardner (‘Transformers’), Santino Fontana (‘The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel’) and Vella Lovell (‘Your House or Mine’) , among others.
‘Crazy Ex-Girlfriend’ is a great comedy that puts a fun twist on the clichés of the romance genre and musicals, with an overflowing protagonist who evolves throughout the seasons. If you haven’t had your eye on it yet, take advantage before they remove it from the platform.
