Timothée Chalamet He has become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood, but in 2014 he was a little-known actor. That he chose that year is no coincidence, since it was then that he had a small appearance in ‘Interstellar’, the acclaimed science fiction film from Christopher Nolan. However, what promised to be the great pitch of his career ended up becoming one of the biggest disappointments of his life.
“I didn’t have a career back then”
Chalamet’s role in ‘Interstellar’ is that of Tom, the son of Matthew McConaughey in fiction. The problem is that this character is played by casey affleck during most of the footage, with the protagonist of the highly anticipated ‘Dune 2’ taking care of it when he is a minor. His presence is quite small, to the point that he himself admitted some time later that during the promotional campaign for the film he felt “a fraud“, given that “I didn’t really have a career back then“.
The huge disappointment for him came when he was able to see the final cut of ‘Interstellar’, since he was very confident in a scene he had recorded and which, according to him, was essential for the most emotional side of the film. The moment in question was a video message he had recorded for his father to view while he was in space. The problem came when that moment was practically eliminated completely, since Nolan preferred to focus that scene on the reaction McConaughey’s character had.
That scene ended up becoming one of the most celebrated in the entire film and Chalamet himself acknowledges both that McConaughey is exceptional at the time and that it was a sequence that had to focus on Cooper’s character. That did not prevent the actor’s disappointmentto the point that he himself remembers that after seeing it for the first time -he would later see it 12 more times in theaters!- he was quite affected:
I went home with my father and cried for an hour because I thought my role was going to be bigger.
Obviously, Chalamet He doesn’t hold any kind of grudge against Nolan for having reduced his participation so much and then he didn’t have to wait too long for his career to reach another level thanks to the premiere of ‘Call Me By Your Name’ just three years later…
In Espinof: ‘Interstellar’ is revolutionary: this is how Christopher Nolan’s film changed both cinema and science
