This type of conduct, also known as “revenge porn”, is considered a crime that is penalized both on digital platforms and legally in Mexico thanks to the historic efforts of the feminist struggle, since in November 2020 The “Olympia Law” was unanimously approved .
However, in addition to reporting sexual crimes to the prosecutor’s office, other types of tools can be used to prevent the further dissemination of content without consensus on digital platforms, such as StopNCII.org.
Here is a guide on What to do if your intimate images are leaked.
What is StopNCII.org?
StopNCII.org is a free tool designed to prevent intimate images and videos from being shared online without consent.
The tool works by generating a unique hash or fingerprint to your intimate images/videos. The hash or unique fingerprint is placed by using an algorithm to assign a specific marker to an image or video. All duplicate copies of the image or video have the exact same specific marker or hash.
StopNCII.org then shares the hash with participating businesses so they can help detect and remove any images or videos that match the hash from being shared online.
The tool collaborates with Facebook, Instagram, and now also Bumble and TikTok.
“Our goal is to give people greater control over their private images through our product features, policies, and partnerships,” Lisa Roman, Bumble’s vice president of Public Policy, said of the new alliance.
On the other hand, Julie de Bailliencourt, TikTok’s head of Product Policy, shared that one of the goals at TikTok is to foster a safe and supportive environment for the community.
According to a press release, since the December 2021 tool came out, StopNCII.org has helped more than 12,000 people create cases to help people who have been victims of their intimate images being shared without their consent.
