Through the video, Hemings reflects on how “difficult and stressful” the implications of a person with dementia going “out into the world” and being able to do it safely, “even if it’s just for a coffee”, referring to the headlines and images that they have seen about Willis in the last few days on an outing with his friends.
“This goes out to the photographers and video people trying to get scoops on my husband when he’s out: respect his space. I know it’s your job, but keep your space,” she urges.
“Please don’t yell at my husband asking how he is or whatever, the ‘yujus’ and the ‘yippee ki-yay’ … just don’t do it,” he adds. “Let our family, or whoever is with him that day, get him from point A to point B safely,” he urges.
Willis and Heming were married in 2009 and have two daughters together, Mabel and Evelyn. By communicating that the actor has dementia, the family invited everyone to find out about dementia and, if they are in his situation, to seek support from specialized associations.
