With a slight delay compared to the original plans (which placed it at the end of 2022), HBO Max has finally released ‘Poor Devil’, the adult animated series led by the “chanantes”. Ernesto Sevilla, Joaquin Reyes and Miguel Esteban (‘Chapter 0’, for example) co-create a fiction that represents a new milestone in adult animation.
And we cannot deny that we are currently having a great time in the anime, with cinematographic proposals such as ‘Gora automatikoa’ and ‘Unicorn Wars’ being praised by critics and awards. However, in our country there is a great pending issue in the field of television that this trio comes to fill in a remarkable way.
Composed of a first season of eight episodes (which I have been able to see all of), ‘Poor devil’ takes us on the adventures through the life of Stanthe same antichrist that Reyes gives the voice to, and how, one month after the prophecy is fulfilled and the Armageddon is unleashed, he seems more interested in pursuing his dream of being a Broadway actor.
Fun, satire and crude imitation
I’m not going to deceive you. I was with some fear when watching this new series. Despite the fact that the trailer hinted at certain things, it also warned that we should moderate some enthusiasm with this new entry in the television fiction of Seville, Kings and company.
Fortunately the series is brilliant and really funny with the humor that characterizes the chanante world. ANDThis includes satire and crude imitations.. Of course, I warn that the same costs a bit to enter the proposal due to that small barrier to entry that other adult animation series usually have in what we are doing to the world and characters (with a magnificent cast) that they propose.
In this sense, we could highlight certain decisions such as the fact that the series is set in New York, which, although it is understandable both due to the protagonist’s aspirations and even symbolism, leaves a certain feeling of disappointment. not having advocated for a homeland setting.
with an aesthetic closer in a certain sense to Hulu’s proposals (like ‘Solar Opposites’) than those of Adult Swim (although it does have some remnants), perhaps what stands out the most for bad is the animation, which is sometimes somewhat poorer than what the script requires.
With heart
But neither is it something that takes us completely out of the series, which enjoys an enviable pace and even dares to make episodes practically “stand alone”, in which the protagonists are mere secondary. I’m talking specifically about episode seven, which is quite painful and emotional with a story starring a young girl.
‘Poor devil’ It is a joy for fans of animation. Not only because of the scarcity that we have in Spain in the production of this type of fiction, but also because it is a big step in the right direction. I hope we have more series like this.
Because, ultimately, we have a very successful proposal that, although it has its ups and downs (there are some uninspired episodes), the average is more than remarkable. With ‘Poor Devil’ we have guaranteed fun with Satanism, wonderful satires and unexpected tenderness.
