Batgirl is the latest addition to a not-so-honorable list, as since the 1990s DC has had movies with great potential for success, but at one point in production Warner Bros. decides to cancel production.
Remember some of the DC movies that didn’t make it to theaters.
batgirl
In 2021 Warner Bros. Pictures gave the green light to this film located within the DC Extended Universe, with Leslie Grace as Barbara Gordon / Batgirl, Brendan Fraser as the villain Firefly, JK Simmons as Jim Gordon and the return of Michael Keaton as Batman .
With the film shot in its entirety, and in the midst of post-production and special effects work, Warner Bros. backed down and opted to shelve the film, which will no longer be released in theaters or on digital platforms or video formats.
Wonder Twins
With an air of nostalgia, Warner Bros. Pictures had greenlit a movie centered on the Fantastic Twins, the characters we met on the Super Friends animated series, with KJ Apa (Archie in Riverdale) and Isabel May (Elsa in 1883) as its protagonists.
But in one of David Zaslav’s first decisions as CEO of the new Warner Bros. Discovery, the company decided to cancel production on the film, which didn’t even have a script.
superman lives
Superman Lives is Tim Burton’s most remembered canceled movie. A scene where Bruce Wayne, played by Michael Keaton, appeared at Superman’s funeral was even contemplated in Kevin Smith’s script.
Brainiac would be the main villain of this film that was finally canceled due to the poor results of Batman and Robin among critics, and Burton did not get involved in another DC project after Batman Returns.
Justice League Deadly
Another of the films that failed to reach theaters is Justice League Mortal, which was directed by George Miller and had a cast made up of DJ Cotrona as Superman, Armie Hammer as Batman, Common as Green Lantern, Santiago Cabrera as Aquaman, Adam Brody as Flash, Hugh Keays-Byrne as Martian Manhunter, Jay Baruchel as Maxwell Lord, and Teresa Palmer as Talia Al Ghul.
After a pre-production process where the costumes and some conceptual work with the cast were revealed, Warner Bros preferred to can the project, in part due to the writers’ strike that occurred in 2008.
batman triumphant
Within days of the premiere of Batman and Robin in theaters, Warner Bros commissioned Joel Schumacher to make a new installment in the Dark Knight saga, with the return of George Clooney as Batman, Chris O’Donell as Robin and Alicia Silverstone as Batgirl.
Jeff Goldblum was seen as Scarecrow and Courtney Love as Harley Quinn, who would be an unacknowledged daughter of Jack Napier / Joker who would avenge her father’s death. But the poor results of Batman and Robin led Warner Bros. to reconsider future projects.
Batman v. Superman (2004)
In the early years of the 21st century, Warner Bros. Pictures came up with the movie Batman v Superman, with Colin Farrell as Bruce Wayne / Batman and Jude Law as Clark Kent / Superman, with Wolfrang Petersen (Air Force One) and Akiva Goldsman directing. as a producer.
Batman vs Superman was planned to be released in 2004, but due to the darkness of the story, the project was scrapped. In 2005 Warner Bros. restarted the Dark Knight franchise with Batman Begins and a year later the Man of Steel returned to the cinema with Superman Returns.
The Batman (with Ben Affleck)
After Justice League, the next DC Comics project was the reboot of the Batman franchise, with Ben Affleck as the protagonist and director, in addition to being the screenwriter of the film, which would feature Deathstroke as a villain.
Unfortunately, the bad experiences that Ben Affleck had filming the reshoots of Justice League, added to his alcoholism problems, prevented him from having a strong script, so Affleck handed over to Matt Reeves the direction, which led to the recent premiere from TheBatman.
Green Lantern 2
In 2011, directed by Martin Campbell, Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Comics released Green Lantern, the first superhero movie that did not have Batman or Superman as the lead, although the box office and critical results were not what was expected.
In the film there was a post-credits scene where Sinestro used the yellow ring of power to become the villain of the second part, but after the poor reception of the film, Warner Bros. decided not to continue the franchise.
Deathstroke
Another of the DC Extended Universe movies that was planned to be released after Justice League and The Batman was Deathstroke, with Joe Manganiello as the protagonist and Gareth Evans as director.
Unfortunately Deathstroke was canceled due to Warner Bros. strategy to explore more DC movies.
