Barbie continues to bet on diversity and now adds a transgender doll to its ranks, giving visibility to the LGBTIQA+ collective. This would be the first doll of her type in the company’s history, a fact that has been applauded by various collective groups and minorities.
This new Barbie is inspired by actress, producer and LGBT rights advocate Laverne Cox and is very similar to her, with a dark skin tone, brown eyes and a muscular build.
The doll is part of Barbie’s Tribute Collection line, which celebrates those who have made a mark on culture with their contributions.
pioneer. Icon. Defender. In honor of her 50th birthday, Barbie is thrilled to welcome @LaverneCox as the newest doll to the #Barbie Tribute Collection, recognizing her impact on television, film, fashion and the LGBTQ+ community. Also, we are proud to celebrate Laverne’s birthday with a donation to @TransFamilySOS because everyone deserves to feel safe, seen and celebrated for who she is.
Cox says she is proud to be a part of this project and hopes her fans have the opportunity to add the doll to your collection.
I can’t wait for ‘fans’ to find my doll in store windows and have the opportunity to add a transgender Barbie doll to their collection. I hope that people can see this Barbie and dream big like I have in my career.
– Laverne Cox
The doll includes a base stand, certificate of authenticity and two interchangeable dresses: one red and one silver. It can be purchased on the official Mattel website for the amount of 40 dollars.
