As a songwriter, there are things that Ani Cordero cannot express with euphemisms or with words other than those that spring from her chest.
This is what happened with the first cut of “Anamores”, an album of 10 songs that has just been released. As much as she searched for how she could express the same thing, nothing could replace the very Puerto Rican phrase “I don’t feel like fucking”. And so, just like that, he put it in the title of the first court of hers.
“It’s the first time I’ve used a bad word in a song,” said the New York-based singer, percussionist and activist from Puerto Rico. “I was trying to express something so particular, and it is an expression that is used so much in Puerto Rico, that there was no other way to say it, so it was a song that had to be written that way.”
Ani does not reveal the experience that inspired the lyrics of this song, but she does say at the top of her lungs that she dedicates it “to all the women who are tired of trying to explain, resolve and negotiate with a person who doesn’t deserve it.”
“After all, why would you want to have a conversation if there is no resolution?” he said. “Because when you’re dealing with a person who doesn’t have that attitude, he doesn’t have it, and that’s not going to change.”
In the video for this topic, however, he goes beyond the stubbornness of certain human beings. In it, Ani takes that feeling of frustration and uses it as an expression of the courage that “all of us Boricuas have with the corrupt government” and what is happening in the archipelago.
That is, the supposed advantage of the government towards the humble people who are buying their properties at a price well below their value to sell them to US developers for up to millions of dollars. These businessmen are exempt from paying property taxes on the island, a possibility that is not available to Puerto Ricans.
“Anamores”, a bilingual concept album that combines the name of Ani (Ana) with the word “amores” is dedicated to her grandmother, who passed away last year and was also called Ana.
“He was also a love of my life,” he said. “It’s a bit of a dedication to his love and that legacy, and also because I’ve been in a process of meditation and reflection and I’ve been thinking a lot about those life connections that last even longer than life.”
The disc is accompanied by meditation cards. With each theme will be included one that will help to feel emotions to be able to leave them if they are negative, or enjoy them if they are positive, explained Ani.
Regarding a concert tour, he said that he is in the process of putting together a tour, which will not be typical shows, but rather an experience very much in his style.
