One would think that the golden age of streaming means that all more or less recent important movies should always be available on platforms, but reality has told us a very different story. Today I am here to talk to you about a particularly incomprehensible case, since ‘Prisoners’, the stupendous thriller directed by Denis Villeneuve in 2013, it was the number 1 movie worldwide on Netflix last week but in Spain right now It is impossible to watch it on streaming.
Why do I have to see her
On paper, ‘Prisoners’ could have been yet another movie in which a girl is kidnapped and her father does absolutely everything in his power to locate her. That has been the basis of countless revenge stories, something also present here, but what is prioritized here is the despair of the character played by Hugh Jackman and how that leads him to cross several red lines, with the particularity that the policeman incarnated by Jake Gyllenhaal He also has a lot of presence.
The excellent way in which the also director of ‘Dune 2’ managed to put into images the growing agony that the script written by Aaron Guzikowski -creator of ‘Raised by Wolves’- helps elevate ‘Prisoners’ to another level. Of course, giving all the merits to him on that side would be a mistake, since his extraordinary work as cinematographer of Roger Deakins It gives a special texture to a story in which how well it plays with moral doubt around what is happening on the screen is also key.
Added to this is the impeccable work of its cast. It is true that Jackman, Gyllehaal and Paul Dano they shine with special intensity, but the performances of the rest of the cast would easily be the envy of 95% of the movies that hit theaters every week. They all know very well what ‘Prisoners’ requires of them to finish shaping a film that may take a little longer than necessary, but it is still a minor drawback compared to all its virtues.
For my part, I am quite clear that ‘Prisoners’ is a film better than other more popular Villeneuve titles like ‘Blade Runner 2049’ or ‘Dune’, and I hope that soon there will be a platform that will make it available for streaming in Spain again, since it could previously be seen on Movistar+ and HBO Max. At least so that the rest can enjoy it at any time, since I’ve had it in my Blu-ray film collection for a long time -be careful if you want to buy it, it’s out of print, but you can get it imported with dubbing and subtitles in Castilian-. I have already said more than once that buying a physical format is more important than ever in the streaming era.
