Netflix seemed determined to finance the new Nancy Meyers but has changed its mind. The streaming platform has decided not going ahead with what was going to be the most expensive romantic comedy in historywith a cast that included stars like Penélope Cruz or Scarlett Johansson.
Well, not in the end
Netflix surprised by accepting the new project of Nancy Meyers, a romantic comedy that was going to cost him 150 million dollars. Although the study had managed to lower the figure to 130 millionwas still well above a genre that usually handles medium budgets.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Netflix has finally backed down and has canceled the project, having been unable to reach an agreement on the budget. Its working title was ‘Paris Paramount’.
The film was to be written and directed by Nancy Meyersa veteran director of films of this genre such as ‘The father of the bride’, ‘You to London and I to California’ either ‘The scholarship grantees’his most recent production premiered eight years ago.
Surely, a large part of the budget for this ambitious proposal would be allocated to the cast, which had already confirmed such well-known faces as that of Penelope Cruz, Owen Wilson, Scarlett Johansson and michael fassbender as headliners.
A project that was going to exceed 120 million for what currently holds the highest-grossing romantic comedy title in history (‘How do you know if…?’, which crashed at the box office). Unless the film finds funding elsewhere, we’re left wondering what this story about a filmmaker and a producer who had a relationship in the past and are now forced to work together again would have played out.
