We thought that the good weather was already an almost tangible reality but the cold storm that has half of Spain below zero has given us a good smack of reality. So, with the desire that we have, we are already getting into a state of mind spring, we wonder where one can flee in winter when you need a respite from the thermometer. The answer, as logic tells us, lies to the south. And, if we go down to the Canary Islands, success is more than guaranteed.
Often known as the “Islands of Eternal Spring”, the Canary Islands have a warm climate throughout the year, with temperatures that rarely drop below 16ºC in winter. But, as the Canary Islands are made up of seven main islands, we want to focus on Lanzarote. More specifically in the exotic beauty of Teguise, where civilization blends in in an unusual way with the surrounding volcanic landscape.
Teguise, is the old capital of the island of Lanzarote. In fact, it was one of the first urban centers that developed in the Canary archipelago. Furthermore, it is within the amazing volcanic landscape that form ancient craters and rivers of solidified lava.
In addition to nature, a good part of the island’s history is reflected in its old town, a neat white hamlet with cobbled streets amid the unusual landscape of craters and plains of dark volcanic earth.
In this historic center there are beautiful examples of popular and noble architecture with elements of local tradition, such as the typical wooden balconies. Above all, the architecture of Teguise is deeply marked by the footprint of the Lanzarote architect César Manrique, conserving two of his main creations: the Cactus Garden and the foundation that bears his name (former residence of the artist).
In this way, in the heart of the town, you can find some of the most important historical buildings in Lanzarote, such as the Spinola Palace or the convents of Santo Domingo and San Francisco. And very close, next to the extinct volcano of Guanapay, rises the Santa Barbara Castlerestored and enabled as the Museum of the Emigrant.
However, and returning to nature, Teguise is also famous for the beautiful beaches of Famara and Costa Teguise. The latter is one of the main centers of the island, where a wide variety of hotel establishments, urbanizations, shops and restaurants meet.
Some of its beaches, especially that of The spoons, are known for the conditions they meet for the practice of windsurfing. The wild beauty offered by the Famara beach, to the west of Lanzarote, a true paradise for surfers. However, interesting tours of the surrounding area can be undertaken from this ancient island capital.
