Shortly after announcing the massive layoff of workers that Disney will carry out this year as part of its restructuring, Bob Iger (CEO of The Walt Disney Company) announced that among his upcoming projects will be ‘Frozen 3’, ‘Toy Story 5’ and ‘Zootropolis 2’.
More sequels
This Wednesday, Bob Iger confirmed that there will be sequels to ‘Frozen’, ‘Toy Story’ and ‘Zootropolis’, three of its most profitable animated titles:
I’m pleased to announce today that our animation studios have several sequels in the works to our most popular franchises: ‘Frozen,’ ‘Toy Story,’ and ‘Zootopia.’ We will announce more about these productions very soon, but they are a good example of how we are leaning on our unrivaled brands and franchises.
These novelties were announced shortly after communicating that the company is going to cut 3.2% of its workforce, laying off some 7,000 workers with the aim of reducing costs and save $5.5 billion. They also want to save some 3,000 million by doing without audiovisual content to stop the losses derived from their Disney + platform, which “it will be profitable in 2024”.
The announcement of these sequels wants to be a safe step, relying on the collection obtained by the latest films of these franchises: ‘Frozen 2’ (1,450 million dollars), ‘Toy Story 4’ (1,070 million) and ‘Zootropolis’ ( 1,020 million). It is also a response to the weak response at the box office of the latest original films released, both under a million dollars: ‘Encanto’ (256,800 dollars) and ‘Strange World’ (73,600).
With these new installments, ‘Frozen’ would become a trilogy, ‘Toy Story’ would become a pentalogy and ‘Zootropolis’ would have its first continuation (although it had already established itself as a franchise by having its own series: ‘Zootropolis+’).
