Maura, seven years old and originally from Chile, was diagnosed with breast cancer. The minor has fought since she was five years old against this condition, which would be the first to register in a minor, since cases are normally reported in women between 50 and 60 years of age.
Patricia, mother of the minor, noticed a lump in the girl’s chest while she was bathing her, a sufficient sign for her to go to the doctor and receive the corresponding diagnosis.
When drying it and putting cream on it, I noticed a small bean (ball) under the nipple. The doctor stressed to me that what he had was not normal. He said that if he waited too long, he would grow, but he never told me that he could come to this (breast cancer).
– Patricia, Maura’s mother
Maura’s case has gone around the world, as it is rare for it to happen at her age. In fact, specialists estimate that her medical condition is one in 400 million. The closest case reported was of a minor from the United States, who received the same diagnosis at 10 years of age.
Patricia confirmed that her daughter has already undergone a mastectomy on her left breast. However, she fears that it will develop metastases, since radiation treatment to eradicate breast cancer applied to adult women cannot be used on Maura due to her age and size, as it would be too aggressive.
My daughter is mutilated and that is the pain that I have. It is strong for a grown person. The only thing she has mentioned to me when I take her to the oncologist is that she doesn’t want to be bald, but beyond that she doesn’t understand that she doesn’t have her breast.
